Cuttack, Aug. 5: Police have detained a youth for allegedly killing his father and a calf with a sharp-edged weapon in the wee hours today. The incident happened at Bayalish Mouza village, 25km from here.

The accused, 25-year-old Ketan Bhoi, was allegedly angry because his family members did not agree to get him married. The deceased has been identified as Biju Bhoi, 73.

In the early hours today, Ketan slit his father’s throat when the latter was sleeping at his house.

“Around 3.45am, I heard my father screaming and when I rushed out of my room, I saw my younger brother slitting the throat of my father with the help of a sharp-edged weapon,” said Sanatan Bhoi, the accused’s brother.

Sanatan said his brother Ketan worked as a labourer here after he quit his job in Mumbai. He had worked as a plumber there for five and returned to the village a few months ago.

Ketan allegedly tried to attack Sanatan after he saw him killing Biju. But Sanatan managed to escape through the window and raised an alarm.

By the time the villagers could overpower Sanatan, he had killed a calf. The villagers handed him over to the police. The weapon used in the offence is yet to be found.

Following the incident, police and forensic experts reached the spot and began investigation. The body was sent for post-mortem.

“We have detained the youth and it is suspected that the he resorted to this behaviour in a fit of rage over family dispute. We are investigating the case,” said a senior police officer.
