Balasore, July 18: A 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 23-year-old woman for nine months in captivity.

The victim claimed to have escaped from his clutches after she got to know that the accused, Harish Chandra Behera of Nilgiri, was planning to sell her in Bengal.

Both the accused and the victim belonged to Babandh village of Nilgiri. She alleged that the accused had come to her house and asked her to accompany him on October 17.

Then he took her to one of his relative’s house for a few days and sexually assaulted her. Later, she was confined at a rented house in Berhampur, where the assault continued. The accused, however, told the police that they had got married and their wedding was solemnised before a notary in Nilgiri. The victim, however, said she was forced to wed.

“Since the victim has alleged rape in confinement, the accused has been booked under several sections of IPC for offences including rape. After medical examinations of both, the accused was produced in court,” said S.R. Mahapatra, sub-divisional police officer Nilgiri.

In another incident, a 23-year-old youth was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl, who was his neighbour at Baisinga in Mayurbhanj. The accused, Taranikanta Mahanta, had visited the girl’s house when other family members were not around and showed an obscene mobile clip to the victim, who is a Class VII student. The girl’s father found them in a compromising position and handed the accused to the police. Sub-divisional police officer, Dhiren Chandra Nanda, said: “The accused was sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected.”
