Lok Adalat scores well

The National Lok Adalat organised throughout the state on Saturday settled over 13,066 cases pending in various courts.

Cuttack: The National Lok Adalat organised throughout the state on Saturday settled over 13,066 cases pending in various courts.

National Lok Adalats were held on Saturday across the country in all courts, including the Supreme Court and high courts, to dispose of lakhs of cases in a day.

The Odisha State Legal Services Authority (OSLSA), along with the District Legal Services Authority in 30 districts, on Saturday settled 14.16 per cent of the 92,257 cases.OSLSA member secretary Balakrushna Mohapatra said: "Eight Lok Adalat benches, formed in the high court with sitting judges, settled 92 of the 766 identified cases, while 12,974 cases were settled in the rest of the state."

"The National Lok Adalat aims to reduce pendency in courts vis-à-vis providing speedy and inexpensive justice to the people. Saturday's efforts have successfully wiped out over 10,306 pending cases and over 2,763 pre-litigation cases from the backlog and pendency in the courts at all level in the state," he said.

Official sources said around 10 lakh cases were pending in various courts across the state. Of them around 1.69 lakh cases are pending in Orissa High Court.

OSLSA officials said a total compensation, including motor accident claims, insurance and so on of Rs 43 crore was awarded. Besides, disposing of 92 cases the eight Lok Adalat benches in the high court awarded around Rs 2.85 crore while amicably settling insurance claims.
