Bhubaneswar, July 13: A girl student and a teacher died when lightning struck at Rangiam Nodal Upper Primary School in Mayurbhanj, nearly 225km from here.
Thirty-three persons suffered injuries in the incident, which took place at 3pm when it was raining. The deceased were identified as Pan Murmu (Class III) and assistant teacher Bhagaban Sahoo, 42.
The local block development officer and the inspector-in-charge shifted the injured students to the nearby Rasgobindpur community health centre. Later, six were shifted to district headquarters hospital at Baripada. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
Assistant collector (emergency) Dayasindhu Parida said: "Out of the six admitted to the hospital, only one has some difficulties in speaking, but others are fine."
On March 18, six students were killed at a playground at Jaripada in lightning attack. Thirteen students were injured in that incident. Around 30 children and youths were watching a cricket tie when thunderstorm forced them to take shelter in an under-construction building, where the lightning struck.
