Cuttack, Jan. 24: A dream came true for English honours student Vaibhav Das when he stepped into the shoes of lawmakers and debated burning issues, such as Jallikattu and demonetisation, during the first Biju Patnaik Mock Parliament organised at Ravenshaw University here today.

The mock parliament was organised as part of the ongoing 150th year celebrations of the institution.

A debate was also organised on rising incidents of sexual abuse and domestic violence against women, to mark the National Girl Child Day being observed today.

The mock parliament was held to create social and political awareness among students and inculcate the habit of having their views on various national and international issues and suggest special measures of achieving common goals and restoring world order.

“Even though Jallikattu was allowed through a special ordinance, it has set a bad precedent as it bypassed the Supreme Court directive. The large-scale violence by protesters and stir launched in support of the event in the name of tradition and culture was not justified,” said Das.

Around 150 undergraduate and postgraduate students of the varsity took in the mock parliament session today.

University dean Sanjay Satpathy told The Telegraph that the varsity had earlier successfully organised three Model United Nations shows which had saw a participation of about 200 students.
