Junctions of chaos

Redesigning of traffic junctions is on cards, The Telegraph takes a look at those that cause problems to commuters in Bhubaneswar

TT Bureau Published 17.04.18, 12:00 AM

Junction

Master Canteen Square roundabout

Peak hours: 6am to 12noon, and 2pm to 10am

No. of policemen at the junction: There is a permanent police outpost, but no traffic police are on duty

Problems: Wrong side driving from Kharavela Nagar and Ashok Nagar sides, absence of traffic lights and zebra crossings

Citizenspeak

It is Bhubaneswar’s most critical roundabout. Though vehicles slow down, accidents are a regular affair at the busy junction. There should be proper regulation

Junction

Kalpana T-square

Peak hours: 8am to 12pm and 3pm to 8pm

No. of policemen at the junction: Two traffic police during peak hours and one at other times of the day.

Problems: Missing stop signs on roads, encroachment of zebra crossings by vehicles, and congestion due to haphazard parking of vehicles near the junction

Citizenspeak

A few months ago, a truck rammed into the fire station building at the junction’s T-side. It happened dur to encroachments near the junction by vehicles and street vendors. This has put pedestrians at great risk

Junction

Sishu Bhawan Square

Peak hours: 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 8pm

No. of policemen at the junction: Only one traffic cop manages the junction throughout the day

Problems: It is an important junction as it links several areas to Capital Hospital, Biju Patnaik Park and airport but the lone traffic cop remains a spectator to violations. The chaos, however, worsens after the cop leaves his post.

Citizenspeak

The busy junction requires more than one traffic cop to manage the vehicular movement efficiently. There should be proper traffic plan in place for the junction

Prapat Hota, a resident of Bapuji Nagar.

Junction

Ravi Talkies Square

Peak hours: 6am to 11am and 4am to 10pm

No. of policemen at the junction: Two cops manage the square that leads to Lingaraj Temple

Problems: Zebra lines are missing and congestion due to irregular parking of vehicles right near the junction made create a mess for pedestrians

Citizenspeak

I regularly frequent the Lingaraj temple and have seen that vehicles never follow traffic norms here. Cops look the other way as vehicles bully their way through the crossing while putting our lives at risk Bidyadhar Mohapatra, a resident of Tankapani Road
