Dhenkanal: A wild elephant trampled a 48-year-old man to death at Kauunripala village in Odapada panchayat area in the district on Friday.
The victim, Akshaya Mahanty, had entered the elephant's corridors, said a forest official.
The herd of jumbos stray into the village to devour the crop field, which leads to frequent outbreaks of man-elephant conflict.
This is the second incident of elephant attack in the last three days. Earlier, one person was killed in Parjanga by a tusker.
The death triggered anger among the villagers who threatened to block the National Highway No. 55.
However, forest officials led by local ranger Asoke Kumar Bhanja pacified them and promised to deploy a squad in the village.
"Akhaya went to the nearby jungle with five people. Suddenly, an elephant attacked them. Everybody escaped but Akhaya was trampled to death. He died instantly," Bhanja said.
The herd is in the area for the past three days and they refused to leave the place despite serious efforts by the forest department.
They are damaging standing paddy crops and attacking people, said P.K. Mahanty a villager.
Another herd of jumbos is causing havoc in nearby Mahabirroad area of the district.
Ajit Mahapatra, 50, was killed by a tusker near his village Ambapalash under Mahabiriroad range on Monday.
A source said Ajit had gone to the paddy field in the evening when an elephant suddenly came from a nearby bush and attacked him.
The animal trampled him to death. He was rushed to nearby hospital where he was declared dead.
