Science exhibition

A number of students took part in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition-2014 organised by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. Professor Gagan Gupta, of NCERT was the chief guest for the occasion. The students presented innovative ideas and designs leaving visitors impressed. Around 425 students of Kendriya Vidyalayas from 25 regions across the country displayed scientific models. The theme for the exhibition was scientific and mathematical innovations. Students demonstrated a variety of scientific innovations on sub-themes such as agriculture, energy, health, environment and resources from drip irrigation models to conserve water, circuits to prevent accidents at unmanned railway crossings, to sustainable farming methods and others.

“The exhibition will not only create scientific acumen among students, but it will also help in making them responsible citizens,” said Lakshmi Chari deputy commissioner, KVS, Bhubaneswar region.

The three-day programme also included quiz, poster competitions and cultural programmes by students. Besides, eminent academics gave lectures during the event.

Mandela’s birthday

Students of the Mother’s Public School celebrated Nelson Mandela’s birthday along with members of the Rotaract Club of Bhubaneswar — Friends. The club members from all over the world celebrated Mandelas’ birthday for a week. At the Declamation Competition, students of classes XI and XII presented speeches of great orators. Some of the speeches were —A tryst with destiny by Jawahar Lal Nehru, I have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Yes We Can by Barack Obama, Three Vision of India by APJ Kalam, Nelson Madela’s Speech and many more. The winners will be awarded at the installation ceremony of the Rotaract Club-Friends, said the school authorities.

Cadets win

The sports competition of East Zone Sainik School group was organised at Sainik School Nalanda in Bihar from July 11 to July 15. More than 360 participants took part in the event, which included football, hockey, basketball and volleyball. Co-curricular activities such as quiz, debates in Hindi and English were included in the competition. The events were held in both junior and senior level. Sainik School, Bhubaneswar, was declared the best in the cultural activities based on culture and traditions of different states. Bhubaneswar was runners-up in overall, while Nalanda was champion. School principal group captain K.C. Taneja praised the cadets, who had participated in the competition on the Sainik School campus.
