The district headquarters hospital at Sambalpur is raising a stink.

Garbage could be seen dumped at several places on the hospital compound. Drains of the health centre are also lying choked. Moreover, piles of waste polythene carry bags could be spotted littered around the premises.

“The unhygienic atmosphere of this hospital will lead to other diseases. Authorities should take steps to improve the sanitary condition here,” said local resident Kishore Dehury.

Everyday, the hospital produces nearly a quintal of waste. It does not have a waste management system. The bio-medical waste is taken to the VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla for disposal in the incinerator. However, the hospital depends on the municipality for removing garbage dumped on its premises.

Hospital manager Sudeep Dutta said: “The sanitary condition of hospital is now better than before.” However, he admitted that the hospital needed much more improvement. “We are dependent on the municipality for the cleaning of the general waste. However, we will also take steps to keep the hospital premises clean,” he said.
