Cuttack, Feb 10: Police today registered a case against some unknown students and staff members for allegedly misbehaving with a lecturer at Ravenshaw University.

Sources said a case had been registered based on a complaint filed by Anjuman Ara, a lecturer in the Hindi department.

In her complaint, Ara alleged that some students of university had misbehaved with her, apart from passing lewd and caste-related comments at her in the department in 2014. She also alleged that senior faculty members had instigated the mob of the students to harass her.

Ara could be contacted despite repeated attempts.

"We have registered a case under Indian Penal Code sections 323 (voluntary causing hurt) and 294 (obscene act or words in public)," said D.P. Patra, inspector in charge of Malgodown police station.

The police have also entered a station diary in connection with an anonymous threat letter to another senior woman faculty member of the university, Sanhita Padhi.

Padhi, a senior reader in botany department, had earlier brought allegations of mental harassment against her by the varsity authorities.

"On February 6, I received a one-and-a-half page letter in Odia in which the sender warned me against revealing all irregularities going on at the university to the public through media," Padhi said.

In August last year, Padhi had brought allegations of mental harassment and exploitation of a few girls by some professors at the premier educational institution.

On January 25 this year, the varsity authorities had constituted a three-member fact-finding team to conduct an internal inquiry into the allegations. However, both Padhi and Ara had not deposed before the fact-finding team because they claimed the committee would not conduct a fair inquiry.
