Berhampur, Aug. 18: Police arrested a security guard for killing a 77-year-old woman in Ram Nagar area. Sabitri Maharana used to come out of her house every morning to pluck flowers. The accused, Tapan Pradhan, worked as a security guard in the building.

On August 7 morning, when she came out of the building, the accused hit her with an iron pipe and fled with her ornaments.

“Pradhan was arrested from Mancheswar area in Bhubaneswar and forwarded to the court. We recovered two gold chains and three rings from him,” said P.K. Patnaik, sub-divisional police officer, Berhampur. The police have come to know that Pradhan was earlier involved in 12 incidents of thefts.

In another incident, goons attacked a resident of Harijan Sahi in Badagumula under Gopalpur police station to take revenge on her son Susant Sahu on Sunday night. The injured, Jhunu Sahu, 50, is undergoing treatment at MKCG Hospital.

Susant, who was lodged in jail for his involvement in 12 different cases, returned home on bail on Saturday. “The bike-borne goons asked my mother about Susant. When she refused to divulge any information, they attacked her,” Susant’s sister said.

She lodged a complaint with the police in which she named six persons. “We are investigating the matter,” said Harihar Pani, sub-divisional police officer, Berhampur Sadar.
