Sambalpur, June 30: Students have started queuing up for admissions at various degree colleges of this district with the Gangadhar Meher (Autonomous) College witnessing the maximum crowd. Applicants were seen running on the campus, some with their parents, to pay the admission fees and complete other formalities.

The cut-off marks for the first selection merit list for all 162 degree colleges of the state were published on June 23. The admission process, which began yesterday for 48,019 students selected for first selection, would conclude tomorrow.

“Majority of students from the western part of the state have mentioned Gangadhar Meher (Autonomous) College as their first preference for admission into degree courses,” said B.K. Patel, admission in-charge of the institution, which is popularly known as G.M. College.

There are 492 seats in arts here and the qualifying marks for first selection for students belonging to general category is 60.17 per cent. The qualifying marks are 50.67 per cent and 55.17 per cent respectively for scheduled tribe and schedule caste students. Similarly, the cut-off mark for admission in commerce for general category students is 61.50 per cent, for ST category students, it is 37.8 per cent and for SC category students, it is 48 per cent.

In the science stream, for 128 seats in physics-chemistry-mathematics (PCM) combination of course, the first selection cut-off marks is 76.2 per cent for general category, 62.67 per cent for ST category and 70.67 per cent for SC category.

There are 96 seats in chemistry-botany-zoology (CBZ) combination of course. The cut-off marks for admission into this course for general category students is 67.33 per cent, for SC category students, it is 58.67 per cent and for ST category students, 61.33 per cent.

In computer science, there are 32 seats in G.M. College. The cut-off mark of the first selection list for admission into computer science for the general category students is 67.33 per cent, for ST category students, it is 51.33 per cent, whereas for SC category students, it is 54.17 per cent.

“We had sent letters to 147 students for admission into the arts stream. Out of them, 135 have taken admission. In commerce, 110 turned up yesterday out of the 139 invited students,” said Patel.

In PCM, 57 applicants were invited while 48 took admission, and in CBZ, 43 out of 48 students have been enrolled. In computer science, 21 students have taken admission as nine others, who were invited, did not report to the college.

“We had invited another 147 candidates today and the same number of students will be called for admission in different courses tomorrow,” said Patel.

The second selection list would be published on July 6 on the higher education department’s website www.dheorissa.in. Admission for those students would be conducted on July 11 and 12.

On July 25, another list for spot selection would be announced. Admission for the spot selection list candidates will be conducted on July 26. Moreover, 10 per cent seats in all the subjects will be increased for students of ST and SC category.

This will be done to accommodate students belonging to the two categories. “However, this will be done after the admission process comes to an end,” added Patel.

Classes for freshers in all degree colleges would commence on July 27. Last year, only 53 degree colleges had been included for the Plus Three e-admission process. This year onwards, the department of higher education has made it compulsory for all 1,295 junior colleges and 162 degree colleges to participate in the e-admission process.
