Bhubaneswar, Nov. 3: A 30-year-old man was garlanded with shoes and paraded at Betanda village on the city outskirts for allegedly passing inappropriate remarks at a girl.
Although the incident happened on October 30, police swung into action only today after a video of the incident was uploaded on a social networking site. The cops have now started a probe.
The cops said the accused, Prasant Kamela, had allegedly passed the inappropriate remarks at a 12-year-old girl on October 21. "The girl's school helped arrange a meeting between the two parties on October 30. But, after the meeting, a group of youths put a garland of shoes around Prasant and made him walk 2km. They assaulted him and recorded it on a mobile camera," said a cop.
The police said Prasant, a driver, was married with a four-year-old son. "If Prasant had committed an offence, the police was there to take action against him. Who gave these men the right to violate the human rights of a person?" asked Prasant's father.
Inspector in charge of Balianta police station P.K. Pattanaik said they were yet to receive a formal complaint from either Prasant or his family members.
"The girl has lodged a complaint of sexual harassment. We will register a case and forward it to the Olatpur police station, because the incident took place is in the jurisdiction of that police station," said Pattanaik.
