ONGC, Mumbai, emerged champions in the All-India Kalinga Cup Football Tournament-2014 played at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Wednesday. The Mumbai team defeated Kalighat MS, Kolkata by 2-1 goals in the final. ONGC scored two goals in the first half. Enock Annon scored the first goal on the 26th minute while Kailash Patil netted the second four minutes before half time. The Kalighat team could only score one goal through Subhajit Mazumdar.
Odd ball
Odia cricketer Biplab Samantray played a pivotal role in East Zone’s semi-final victory against North Zone in the Deodhar Trophy on Sunday. Samantray, who could not do much with the bat, scoring only 10 runs, took two wickets that included 2011 World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh and North Zone’s leading scorer of the match Gurkeerat Singh. He even took two crucial catches for his team. East Zone will face West Zone in the final on Wednesday at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. In the under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy Odisha was defeated by Gujarat. In the under-23 inter-state cricket match, played at Mohali, Punjab beat Odisha.
Sports awards
Saheed Sporting Club, Bhubaneswar, felicitated renowned sportspersons on Sunday. Rowing coach Josh Jacob got Kamal Ganguly memorial sports award for the year 2013, while acclaimed football coach Nanda Kishore Pattnaik got the award for 2014. Madan Mohanty was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement award. Cricketers Debashish Mohanty, Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Pritamjeet Das, Rakesh Mohanty, trainer Manoj Biswal and others were also felicitated in the event.
Advanced pawns
Ankush Sahu of Puri won the 4th Bhusandpur Chess Championship- 2014 held in Bhusandpur on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament that saw participation of 72 players from six districts was organised by Bhusandpur Chess Centre under the guidance of Khurda District Chess Association and approved by All-Odisha Chess Association. Lochan Kumar Das and Subhadarshan Behera of Puri came second and third respectively.
National feat
Odisha junior athletes won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals in the 30th National Junior Athletic Championship- 2014 held at Vijaywada. Around 28 state athletes had taken part in the championship that started on November 26. Rajeswari Bhoi secured the silver medal in under-20 girls’ Heptathlon on Saturday. Earlier, Bisworanjan Mohanty bagged the only gold for Odisha on Friday in under-14 boys’ group 100-meter race. Besides, Sekuntu Kulu won a bronze in under-18 girls’ 100-meter race. Damayanti Murmu had got a bronze medal in under-20 girls’ javelin throw on Thursday and Bijay Xoxo secured a bronze in under-14 boys’ 600-metre run on Thursday.
Friendly tie
Media XI won the Friendship Cricket Tournament, organised by Tata Steel at the East Coast Railway Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. Media XI beat Bureaucrats XI by five wickets in the final to retain the title. Media XI successfully chased down the target of 82 runs. This is the fourth time in a row that the media team has won this friendly tourney. Media XI entered the final by defeating Tata Steel XI in their preliminary match.
Sepak takraw
The boys’ and girls’ teams of Raghunath Jew College in Cuttack emerged champions in the CHSE inter- college sepak takraw tournament- 2014 played at the sepak takraw complex in the Barabati Stadium. In the girls’ final, Raghunath Jew College beat S.N. College, Rajkanika by 2-1 sets while in the boys’ final they defeated Stewart Science College of Cuttack by equal margin. Afsara Begum of IPSAR, Cuttack was adjudged the best player in the girls’ category while Ramesh Chandra Biswal was declared player of the tournament in the boys’ category. Total 18 teams had taken part in this event.
Corporate cricket
Vedanta Sesa Sterlite won the 4th Charitable Corporate Cricket League- 2014. The day-night league comes to an end on November 30. Vedanta Sesa Sterlite won the final by beating Utkal Alumina by 34 runs. Vedanta scored 124 in 10 overs and Utkal Alumina could make only 90 runs in 10 overs. Debasis from Vedanta became the man of the match for his excellent batting. Chandra Mohan from Utkal Alumina was adjudged the man of the tournament. Deepak Rout from Utkal Alumina was declared the best captain and the best fielder. Essar group won the fairplay award.
