Sishu Mela

Little angels dolled as Mahatma Gandhi, child labours, Mother Teresa, Jhansi ki Rani and film actors kept the audience in splits with their naïve yet witty comments during a fancy dress competition at Sishu Mela.

Organised by NGO People’s Cultural Centre, the 22nd edition of this children’s festival kicked-off on November 14. The fancy dress competition saw tiny tots aged between three and six years sashaying, twirling and swaying in colourful dresses.

A seminar on “Children's Right to Cultural and Bio-diversity”, theatre festival, signature campaign against child labour and abuse, and scores of competitions were held.

Sishu Mela concluded on November 20 with an award ceremony where winners of various competitions were given away prizes.

Heritage quiz

The zonal round of the annual CBSE Heritage India Quiz was organised at the DAV Public School (Chandrasekharpur), Bhubaneswar, on November 19. Six teams selected in the preliminary rounds competed against each other.

The team from the host school, including Ashwin Behera of Class XI, Swastik Pradhan of Class X and Gaurav Jena of Class IX, emerged champions.

The second and third positions went to the teams from Kendriya Vidyalaya-I, Cuttack, and Kendriya Vidyalaya-III (Mancheswar), Bhubaneswar, respectively.

The champion team qualified for the national finals to be held in Delhi. This quiz is held every year to sharpen students’ knowledge about the rich culture and heritage of the country.

National award

Seetal, a Class II student of DAV Public School (Chandrasekharpur), Bhubaneswar, received the National Child Award-2011 by the Union ministry of women and child development on November 14 for exceptional achievement in the field of academics, art and culture.

Union minister of women and child development Krishna Tirath presented the award at the Plenary Hall of Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

Seetal received a silver medal, a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 10,000. A high power committee of the government of India made her selection.

Saioneers unwind

Stunning performances, felicitation of student achievers, lip-smacking food, invigorating games and a refreshing ambience set the mood for Unwind, the annual fete of Sai International School on November 13.

This year, nearly 100 kiosks were set up on the school campus, housing unique concepts put up by the school clubs, mouth-watering treats and games to entertain one and all. The annual occasion of giving out scholar blazers and badges to all the students who’ve performed excellently in academics was an inspiring example for every student.

Principal Arun Prakash said 291 meritorious scholars were honoured during the annual scholar ceremony by Utkal University vice-chancellor Prashant Kumar Sahoo. The other guests were director of Education World, Bhavin Shah, and regional manager of Connecting Classrooms, British Council-India, Ritika Chanda Parruck.

MY TAKE

Rohtang Pass

As the snow falls

And the trees sway

How beautiful is the

Rohtang way!

The huge snow-capped mountains

And the clouds pass

Below us there was no green at Rohtang Pass.

We wore snow dresses

And wore large shoes

Which would make us walk

And stand on the

glacier base.

The roads are round and round,

That make us feel like merry-go-round.

The road is narrow

With a very narrow

passage

Which made us shiver with fear.

I liked the Rohtang

Pass

And it will be

remembered by me

Till all the days pass.

Spring

Spring is the king of

seasons

It is because of many

reasons

Flowers and fruits bloom everywhere, no sign of winter anywhere.

People love the sight

of gay days,

children in this season go out and play, trees

hanging with fruits in branches, and even a small body dances.

Spring brings joy,

happiness and love,

Brought and spread by a white dove.

I never forget my days in spring,

Lots of happiness

and love it brings

Spring is the king of

seasons,

It is because of these very reasons.

Upholding human values

Kali Prasad Dash.Telegraph picture

Human values are on top of the agenda at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Ambapua, Berhampur. Principal in-charge Kali Prasad Dash said: “The motto of this school is overall development of the 1,500 students studying here. They are the future of this country. We treat education as a necessity.”

The CBSE-affiliated school was set up in 1966 to cater to the needs of central government employees but gradually included students from nearby areas. Today, it is among 40 schools in India that have been chosen to go ahead in the pilot project of “e-class”.

“We are trying to keep pace with the growing demands of the 21st century and set an example for others,” said Dash.

The school is also the cluster head of eight schools including those at Chilka, Gopalpur, Digapahandi, Aska, Bhanjanagar, Gajapati and Kandhamal. The school has modern facilities, a playground, gallery, children’s park, herbal garden, two computer labs, Internet facility and a library.

“We organise teacher training programmes and various regional level competitions. As far as academics are concerned, our students are among the best at the regional and national levels. One of our students, Akash Pathak participated in the Regional Children’s Science competition and has been selected to represent Bhubaneswar region in the national competition in Rajasthan,” said Dash.

“We ensure that no child is deprived of proper attention and conduct regular meetings with parents so that they are aware of their child’s performance and needs,” Dash said.
