Bhubaneswar: The crime branch on Monday started a probe to ascertain the circumstances that forced the Kunduli "gang-rape" victim to commit suicide on January 22.
The development comes amid the controversy of a draft report of the State Forensic Science Laboratory that reportedly claimed presence of semen in the victim's innerwear. A three-member team of the crime branch, led by a officer of the rank of deputy superintendent of police, on Monday headed for Kunduli to gather information about the suicide of the Class IX girl.
The 14-year-old girl of Musaguda village in Pottangi police limits had alleged of being gagged and gang-raped on gunpoint by four uniformed personnel in the Lanjiguda forest while she was on her way to school from Kunduli on October 10. However, the police had later claimed that the medical examination of the victim did not reveal any mark of sexual abuse.
The lab on Monday claimed that the forensic report of the victim was 100 per cent accurate. Its director P.C. Mandal said the final report was accurate and was based on DNA sequencing method.
"Usually the experts prepare the draft report during the inter-divisional examinations. After all the required procedures, the final report is issued. I reiterate that the final report did not reveal presence of semen stain," said Mandal.
Both the Congress and BJP have slammed the police and the lab, alleging sabotage. They also alleged the police of covering up the entire issue by ruling out rape.
The BJP Mahila Morcha on Monday sought the intervention of the Odisha Human Rights Commission in the case and demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for family of the girl. Besides, it accused additional director-general of Human Rights Protection Cell Mahendra Pratap and Koraput police superintendent Kanwar Vishal Singh of withholding and destroying evidence related to the case and demanded their dismissal.
