Sonepur: Western Odisha Development Council chairman Kishore Mohanty said more research was required on saint poet Bhima Bhoi's literature and life.

Speaking at a meeting on the occasion of Magha Mela at the Bhima Bhoi samadhipitha at Khaliapali, Mohanty on Tuesday said there was much more to Bhima Bhoi than what we knew about him.

"The Mahima sect, preached and propagated by Bhima Bhoi, is the only religion that originated in Odisha and spread across the country. Its philosophy and literature is as rich as any other religion," he said. "Not much research has been conducted on the saint poet and his works. More research is needed into his life and literature. Money will not come in the way for research. The council will provide all financial assistance," he said. Mohanty was invited to the occasion as a guest of honour.

State industries minister Niranjan Pujhari said the abode of Bhima Bhoi is the most revered place in the state. "The place needs better road connectivity and other infrastructure. As a minister from the district it becomes my duty to look into the matter," he said.

IAS officer Bishupada Sethi was conferred with the Bhima Bhoi Sruti Samman for his contribution to the development of the Samadhipitha.

Painter Shyam Sundar Meher was given Bhima Bhoi Kala Samman and researcher Braja Mohan Dani was conferred with the Bhima Bhoi Sahitya Samman.

The sadhanapitha of Bhima Bhoi wore a festive look as many Mahima dharma followers from across the country thronged Khali-apali during the Magha Mela which begun on Tuesday.
