Bhubaneswar, May 3: The opening of the four-match hockey test series match between India and Japan at the Kalinga Stadium was disrupted for a few minutes after the floodlights on one of the towers went off.
The incident took place just after the first half was over. It is a major setback for the stadium, which is looking forward to host the World Cup matches in 2018.
The installation of four high-mast towers of 32 metres height was completed in 2013 by the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco) to illuminate the stadium. The installation of floodlights and generator sets cost the state government around Rs 3 crore. Spectators, who assembled at the stadium for the match, also expressed their displeasure following the sudden blackout.
"At a time when the state is looking forward to host World Cup matches, the incident is surely embarrassing," said Abani Sahu, a spectator.
On the other hand, sports director Ananta Kishore Jena said there was no reason to be worried. "The stoppage of light hardly affected the game and we always keep adequate men and standby generators to tackle such situations," said Jena.
Despite the state government announcing free entry for the test series, the stadium failed to attract a full house. While the west stand was packed, there were enough empty spaces in the east stand. "As Japan is ranked much below the Indian team, there might be less response towards the test series. But we are hopeful of a packed stadium in the remaining matches," said a sports department official.
The second match of the series will be played on May 5, while the two other matches will be held on March 7 and March 9, respectively. All the matches will begin at 7 pm.
Spectators were disappointed after the home team only managed to manage a draw in the opening match.
"We came to the stadium expecting a rain of goals by the home team as Japan is a weak side. But the players failed to meet our expectation and could only draw the game," said Saroj Behera, an engineering student.
Though India drew 1-1, Birendra Lakra, the lone player from the state in the current squad, reached a personal milestone by playing his 100th international match today.
