Bhubaneswar, July 12: Several parts of Malkangiri district were cut off from the rest of Odisha following flash floods due to incessant rain for the past two days. Two women, who were swept away by the waters, were killed.
The road communication to two gram panchayats (Mudulipada and Andrahal) on Bonda Hills was cut off by landslide.
Bondas, one of the most primitive tribes of the state, live on Bonda Hills.
Malkangiri collector M. Muthukumar said the district had received heavy rainfall in the past two days.
The district recorded an average rainfall of 139.4mm rainfall yesterday and 26.9mm the previous day. Kudumulgumma received 295mm, Khairput 273mm and Mathili 215mm.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik took stock of the situation through videoconferencing with district collectors and directed officials to ensure that relief reached the Bonda Hills. He also instructed to depute a special team to the affected area.
Naveen, who interacted with the collectors of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Rayagada districts, advised them to take precautionary measures to prevent outbreak of diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.
He asked them to keep adequate stock of disinfectants and medicines at inaccessible and vulnerable pockets.
Special relief commissioner Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said: “Efforts are on to reach the hills from Koraput side.”
Mohapatra also confirmed the two deaths. Four persons had been swept away by the floodwaters. However, two persons have returned home, while the bodies of two others have been recovered,” he said.
The deceased have been identified as Malati Golpeda, 42, wife of Gopi Golpeda, and Phulmani Golpeda, 41, wife of Hari Golpeda.
Both of them belonged to Oringi village.
The government has announced ex gratia assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh to the next of the kin of each victim.
