Sambalpur, Oct. 9: Police have arrested 42 bikers on charges of triple riding on two-wheelers.

They also seized as many as 42 motorbikes during the drive yesterday.

“The cops arrested 12 bikers in the town police limits on charges of triple riding. Similarly, nine bikers in the Khetrajpur police limit, nine in the Dhanupali police jurisdiction and 12 in the Ainthapali police limit were also held,” said a police officer.

“The bikers were arrested under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The drive will continue,” said Sambalpur sub-divisional police officer P.K. Mohapatra.

Triple riding is common in the city. Haphazard parking along main roads across the city is also a regular phenomenon.

Vehicles can be spotted parked in front of offices and shops along the main roads, creating traffic mess.

“However, the police have intensified the enforcement now. They are cracking down on the violators regularly,” said town resident Debashis Mishra.

“This is a good news that the police have stepped up enforcement on the traffic violators. This will help regulating the city’s traffic, especially during the Durga Puja. Moreover, the errant bikers now will fear to violate traffic rules keeping this drive in mind,” said commuter Shyam Sunder Naik.
