A LARGE NUMBER TEMPLES HAVE COME UP ON ENCROACHED LAND ACROSS THE CITY. SUPERSTITION OFTEN DELAYS THEIR DEMOLITION. THE TELEGRAPH TAKES A LOOK AT THREE SUCH STRUCTURES Text By Bibhuti Barik; Pictures By Ashwinee Pati Published 02.06.12, 12:00 AM

Kali temple near Baramunda

The Kali temple near Baramunda is partly on the NH-5 because its entrance encroaches upon the expressway. The ongoing expansion of the road with a flyover near Fire Station Square is affected by its existence. Officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that since the starting point of the fire station flyover was near the Kali temple, the road running parallel to the flyover is very important, but the temple’s entrance was partly blocking this parallel road. Project director of NHAI Odisha Aditya Kumar Ray said: “We have already dealt with some problems with electrical structures which were blocking the progress of the flyover. The problem with the temple will definitely hinder the work progress”.

Tarini temple near Palaspalli-Bhimatangi flyover

After descending from the Palaspalli-Bhimatangi flyover, when one reaches the roundabout on the Bhimatangi-Pokhariput Road, the Tarini temple is there on the right almost encroaching on the road maintained by division II of the public works department (PWD). The positioning of the city bus service signboard clearly indicates that the temple has encroached into the busy road, which connects Pokhariput with the city. Pokhariput has now emerged as one of the busiest housing areas. The local councillor said already the Railways and PWD authorities were told about the encroachment and they should take action. The Railways have started erecting a pillar to demarcate their area and the PWD is likely to start the demarcation work soon. PWD assistant engineer S.K. Mishra said: “We are going to demarcate the area and ask the temple authorities to shift their structure.”

Hanuman temple on Bhimatangi-Pokhariput Road

Apart from the Tarini temple, the Bhimatangi-Pokhariput Road also has a Hanuman temple encroaching on it. This mainly creates problems during the festive season when visitors to the temple park their cars along the road. The straight road also bends a bit because of the positioning of the temple. PWD authorities under division II of the city said they were set to start the demarcation of both the Tarini and Hanuman temples because they are situated on vital locations on the major road. “We are ready to send notices to the temple authorities so that they can take appropriate action, or we would take action against them after intimating the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority,” said a PWD official.
