Bhubaneswar, Oct. 27: The Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) has completed the process of redesigning the existing Plus Two syllabus.
"The new syllabus for science, arts and commerce streams are now ready and will be presented before the academic council for screening during November," said CHSE chairman Basudev Chhotray.
The task of changing the syllabus was assigned to senior Plus Two teachers and subject experts from across the state. At least 10 teachers were assigned for each subject.
The new syllabi are scheduled to be introduced during the next academic year in order to help Odia students fare better in various competitive exams.
"The syllabi has been changed in such a manner that will make it easier for students to appear for competitive exams such as JEE, CAT, MAT, XAT and many other competitive exams," said a senior official at the CHSE.
The decision to change the syllabus began in October last year after the office of the accountant general (AG) asked the technical education department to furnish information regarding the number of students who qualified the JEE (Advanced and Main) from CHSE during 2013-14.
The AG's office asked for information on how many CHSE students got admission into the Indian Institute of Technology and the National Institutes of Technology and explanation on the "extremely poor' performance of the state board. It was noticed during the audit that the quality of state higher secondary education remained far below than that of CBSE and ICSE.
Only 1,364 (15 per cent) students from CBSE and 130 (12 per cent) from ICSE and 1,688 (4.7 per cent) from CHSE had cleared the JEE (Main). Only 6.95 per cent students from Odisha were able to make it to JEE (Advanced).
