Berhampur, March 31: Police claimed to have seized six more pistols from different places that are associated with former Congress MLA Ramesh Jena, who is facing various charges and is currently lodged in jail.
The police said four pistols and five live cartridges were found from an apartment at Jyotsna Enclave near Nayapalli in Bhubaneswar. Two more pistols were seized from a country liquor shop in Bhabinipur near Berhampur owned by Arakhit Jena, Ramesh's father. Arakhit is also lodged in Berhampur jail.
"The raids were conducted following a thorough interrogation of Santosh Behera, a close associate of Ramesh Jena who was arrested in Bhubaneswar earlier. A police team from Berhampur, accompanied by Behera, went to Jyostna Enclave. Santosh spotted the pistols in the flat where Jena used to stay before his arrest. The police team later went to Bhabinipur and seized two more pistols from a country liquor shop," said the inspector general of police, southern range, Amitav Thakur.
"All these pistols were sourced from Munger in Bihar," Thakur said, quoting Santosh Behera.
"So far, 11 firearms had been seized," said Amitav Thakur.
Thakur said Ramesh was also associated with one arms trading case, which was registered at Sadar police station in Berhampur in 2014.
"During that period, Anil Nayak, the driver of Ramesh Jena, was arrested. Santosh had already revealed many facts about Jena's link in trading firearms. We are verifying the facts," said Thakur.
The cops have also a slapped a land-grab case against Jena, Congress councillor of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation R. Murali Mohan and builder Buna Sahu at Sadar police station here. "Ramesh had masterminded the grabbing of 3.16 acres from a complainant and we don't want to disclose his name," said Thakur.
The number of cases registered against Ramesh now stands at 14, police said.
The police took Ramesh's custody for two days for interrogation in a case after securing permission from a court in Aska today.
