Sambalpur: Social media have not only put a senior police officer in an embarrassing situation, but also led him to pay fine for violating law.
Police inspector D. Minz, posted in the security department of the Hirakud dam, did not use his helmet while driving his scooter in Sambalpur town on Friday.
Officials at the police-checking squad between Ainthapali and Fatak did not even stop him, while they detained several other two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmet.
Seeing this, a youth followed the inspector on his bike, intercepted him and confronted the cop as to why he was not wearing helmet. The youth also asked him why the cops had allowed him to go while other were detained for the same offence.
"Just because you are a police inspector, no police official stopped you. Are police personnel exempted from the rule? You even did not stop at the checking point, where large number of people were detained for paying fine for the same reason," the bike rider said.
Minz replied the youth that he had forgot to bring the helmet in a hurry. The bike rider recorded the photograph and entire conversation on his mobile and made it viral on the social media immediately.
Sambalpur police superintendent Sanjeev Arora saw the post and reacted: "the law is equal for every body".
He immediately called up the traffic inspector and directed him to collect fine from Minz. The erring cop came from Hirakud and paid a fine of Rs 100 for not using helmet.
