Balasore: The deputy inspector-general of police (eastern range) Amitendra Nath Sinha extended help to two injured motorcycle riders who were stranded on the road following an accident.

Sinha was on the way to office in his official car when he saw two accident victims lying on the road.

Although onlookers and passers-by crowded near the accident spot near Biju Patnaik Park on the OT Road, no one came forward to take then to the hospital.

Sinha got off from his car and immediately sent the injured duo in his service vehicle to the headquarters hospital with his security personnel and ensured their admission. He got another car to pick him up.

Bhaskarchandra Barik and Sarat Chandra Mahabhoi, both residents of Udaynagar, were going on a motorcycle when the accident occurred around 8.30am.

"In most cases, people don't come forward to help accident victims because they want to avoid litigation. Consequently, many victims with the chances of survival die," said Sinha. "But now, the law protects the rescuers of accident victims. They no longer have to worry about harassment at hospitals, police stations and courts after they help a road accident victim."

"It was very nice of Sinha to help them. This will encourage others to help accident victims," said Prasuram Pradhan, an advocate.
