Bhubaneswar: Police on Friday registered a case against the daughter and wife of IPS officer Pranabindu Acharya on the basis of a complaint filed by constable Puspalata Bhoi, who had an altercation with them at AG Square on Thursday.
While the daughter of the IPS officer, currently posted as the ADG of railways and coastal security, had accused the constable of slapping her, the traffic wing of the police had denied the allegation.
Police on Friday registered a case under sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 294 (use of obscene language), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Deputy commissioner of police Anup Kumar Sahoo said the case had been registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the constable.
"We have started an investigation to find out what exactly happened at the spot. We are going through the CCTV footage as well," said Sahoo.
Police sources said the preliminary investigation did not show the lady constable of either manhandling the accused or any indulging in misconduct with respect to the IPS officer's daughter. The constable had said she had only stopped the car because it violated a traffic rule.
Acharya, the IPS officer, welcomed the investigation and said the truth should be revealed.
Several incidents of traffic personnel being abused and assaulted have taken place in the city in the recent past.
On July 19, a 37-year-old man claiming to be an active member of a nationalised party, was arrested by the police for allegedly molesting a lady traffic constable at Sachivalay Marg. The accused, identified as Susant Kumar Nayak, had threatened the cop on duty after he was stopped for jumping signal.
In January last year, three traffic men were injured after they were allegedly assaulted with sharp cutter by two bothers during traffic enforcement at AG Square.
