Bhubaneswar, July 8: Following an order of the higher education department, the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) had started inspecting self-financing junior colleges across the state few months ago.
The move aims to evaluate the infrastructure and the academic atmosphere in those colleges. The council uploaded its report on the official website yesterday. So far, the CHSE has inspected 317 self-financing colleges. The report shows that only 10 out of the 42 junior colleges in Khurda district have hostels. Seven out of the total 13 colleges here have no hostels.
Every year, thousands of students reach the city for pursuing higher education. However, with most colleges in the city lagging behind in number of hostels, finding an accommodation becomes a costly and tedious affair for most out-stationed students.
In its report, the council had said that some colleges had no proper library and laboratory facility and no more than two rooms for their students to study.
The council has also prepared a datasheet mentioning the requirement to be fulfilled by the colleges. No inspection has been conducted at the government colleges so far.
CHSE chairman Basudev Chhatoi said: "The college authorities have been asked to send us their opinions or objections on the report within 10 days, after which we will forward the report to the higher education department."
Sources said the BJB Autonomous College had one hostel for boys and one for girls, which was shared by students of both the junior and senior sections. Besides, the college has Ambedkar hostel, which is reserved for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students.
While the boys' hostel has 104 seats, the other two have 100 seats each. Apart from these three, there is also one 100-bed hostel for the boys of BJB Junior College, but that is not adequate.
Hundreds of students, especially girls, struggle to get an alternative accommodation near the college.
The Basic Science College in the city has no hostel at all, making things very difficult for the students. "I have been in touch with a senior from my village, who will help me find a boarding facility for me," said Bhargav Mishar, a student from Paradip who has been selected for admission into the college.
Apart from these institutes, the Maharshi (Junior) College of Natural Law, the City Women's College and the Biju Patnaik (Junior) College of Science and Education have no hostels.
