Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik was among the star attractions in the stands as fan frenzy gripped the city on Sunday during Bengaluru FC's 2-0 win over Jamshedpur FC at the maiden Indian Super League match at the Kalinga Sports Complex.

The crowds started thronging the stadium hours before the match. Though the stadium has a capacity to seat 12,000 , it was not full to capacity. Sports department sources said around 75 per cent seats were occupied.

"The congregation was satisfactory keeping in mind that this was the first such football match at the stadium. Preparations started in December and we are delighted that thousands turned up. Hosting this match will bring other football matches to the venue," said a sports official.

Jamshedpur FC, the Tata Steel-owned side, has adopted Kalinga Stadium as its second home ground for its debut campaign in the league.

Having made its way into the top four after a slow start to its debut campaign, Steve Coppell's side approached the game high on confidence. With just a game left to play in the league stage after this game, a win over the other debutants might not have sealed its place in the top four, but would have given Jamshedpur FC some respite before the final match of the preliminary round.

However, two goals in the first half put Bengaluru FC in the driving seat as the home side lost momentum. Having gone down to Jamshedpur FC at home in the first leg fixture, the Blues were keen to exact revenge and managed to redeem themselves.

The match was billed as attack versus defence with Bengaluru FC boasting the best goal count, while Jamshedpur FC had the best defence. In the end, however, it was the league leaders that prevailed.

A number of supporters of both the teams thronged the stadium and expressed happiness over the stadium infrastructure. "We have been spurting Benagluru FC and thronged various stadiums during its home and away matches. We have not been to the venue, but the stadium looked stunning," said a Bengaluru FC fan.

Police had also made elaborate arrangements. Traffic was restricted on the stretch connecting Behera Sahi Sqaure and Nicco Park Sqaure from 4pm to 11pm. "The match concluded without any glitch. All the spectators were frisked properly. Adequate parking arrangements were also made," said deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi.
