Balasore, March 28: A platoon of police force has been deployed at Laxmannath inter-state border checkpost on NH-60 after irate lorry drivers ransacked the gate yesterday.
The drivers, seeking entry from the Bengal end of the checkpost, ran out of patience after waiting for hours in queue to obtain clearance.
“We have taken 4 lorry drivers in custody for creating nuisance,” said Rajesh Kumar, Balasore’s SP.
“On the request of the district collector, we have also provided home guards to assist the gate officials,” he said.
Yesterday, the irate lorry drivers not only ransacked the check post’s office, but also crossed the gate without obtaining valid pass.
Police force rushed to spot to clear the traffic congestion, said Jaleswar’s sub-divisional police officer, Santosh Nayak.
Hundreds of lorries were stranded at the checkpost following suspension of junior motor vehicle inspector Achyutananda Dash and withdrawal of unauthorised private personnel from the checkpost after the transport commissioner’s surprise visit to the place on Saturday.
Several irregularities were detected by transport commissioner Surendra Kumar during the surprise inspection.
“It has become a very difficulty task to manage traffic at the gate after we removed all the private personnel following the commissioner’s instruction,” said regional transport officer P.K. Satpathy.
