Celegance-2012, the annual techno-cultural fest of C.V. Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneswar, was celebrated from April 5 to April 7.
Celegance, short for “Celebration with elegance”, kicked off with a formal inauguration followed by a host of exciting dos in which over 1,500 students, including those from other colleges, participated. The college hosted 34 events, of which 18 were intra-college and 16 inter-college activities.
The events that drew the most crowds were robotics, lead India, paper presentation, Nukkad (theatre and drama), quiz contests, bulls and bears, gully cricket, modern dance, rock band and DJ show. The cultural events organised in the evenings were a big hit with the participants, who grooved to the ear-splitting music played by the rock bands and the DJ.
The event concluded with presentation of trophies and certificates to toppers from various branches and the P.C. Das Memorial Award to the best student of 2012, Suryasnata Tripathy, a final-year student of electronics and telecommunications at the college. Green drive
Green drive
A group of students of Padmanava College of Engineering, Rourkela, made the campus their canvas and infused new life into the greenery around them. The students, who are also members of the college’s Rotaract Club, painted the tree trunks with lime and also swept the premises, which had been carpeted with dead leaves, dry twigs and sundry rubbish.
“The students wanted to add a lively touch to the trees, beautify the campus and spread awareness among their friends, juniors and teachers about the depleting green cover and the importance of planting saplings,” said head of student affairs Balbir Singh.
Bright future
A bright future awaits future managers of the country who would play a decisive role in shaping the global economy, said president of the St. Cloud State University, USA, Earl H Potter III.
He was addressing the fifth annual convocation of the Asian School of Business Management, Bhubaneswar. Potter said the gap between India and the US was gradually shrinking as the former had been experiencing a tremendous technological boom as well as a rapid industrial growth accompanied by a largely accelerating middle-class economy and enhanced growth in the age group of 18-35.
The other guests, including country president of Alstom-India Sunand Sharma and dean of Argentine University of Enterprise Ricardo Fabian Orosco also addressed the students. Managing director of Foton India Operations Rakesh Kalra gave away the diplomas to the graduating students of ASBM, Bhubaneswar, ASBM Centre of Distance Education, Hyderabad, and to the pass-outs of the special PGDM in logistics and supply chain management course run in collaboration with Asia logistics major Gati.
The topper, Swati Dutta, was awarded the Lanco Infratech gold medal while toppers of international business Madhulipsa Pruseth, banking insurance and financial services Mamta Prajapati, logistics and supply chain management Tuhin Kanta Mishra and ASBM-Hyderabad topper Vani Kotta were awarded gold medals by Dhanush Infotech, State Bank of Hyderabad, Gati and Sew Constructions respectively. The director’s gold medal was awarded to the best all-rounder of the business school, Tuhin Kanta Mishra. Two MoUs were signed with St. Cloud State University and University of Enterprise, Argentina.
Car savvy
Young techies at the Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), Bhubaneswar, took part in a series of contests organised by automobile major Mahindra and Mahindra to showcase their knowledge and talent. The winners got a direct entry to the Mahindra recruitment interviews. The company has chosen around 30 engineering institutes across the country for the event along with ITER. The event, styled as Mahindra Igniter’s Day, provided a platform to students to demonstrate their automotive knowledge and talent while enabling them to share their passion in the field, ITER’s additional dean R.K. Hota said. The event included a technical paper presentation contest (in which 10 students qualified for the finals), a design contest and a quiz on cars and agricultural products marketed by the company.
Fest fun
Fun, excitement and creativity ruled the campus of Modern Institute of Technology of Management, Bhubaneswar. The institute hosted its second tech fest, Maverick-2012. More than 100 students from different colleges took part in the various adventurous and technically challenging activities. Principal A.K. Sahoo read out the institute’s annual report. Retired bureaucrat Phani Bhushan Das was the chief guest for the occasion. Das distributed prizes to the winners of the different competitions held at the college over the last year. The guest addressed the gathering on the changing nature of knowledge, life and nature and career prospects.
Technical knowhow
The Microsoft Dream Spark Yatra-2012 was organised at Padmanava College of Engineering, Rourkela, where seminars were held for students in two phases on April 1 and April 8. Over 400 students took part in the event, and received certificates of participation and an electronic key enabling them to download Microsoft programmes free of cost. There were also attractive gifts for students selected through a quiz competition during the seminar.
Health camp
On the occasion of World Health Day, the Rotaract Club of Aryan Institute of Engineering and Technology and the Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar organised a free health check-up camp on April 7. Reputed doctors were invited to advise and diagnose people from different villages near the capital, who were given free medicine.
Legally sound
KIIT School of Law, Bhubaneswar, organised the second H.R. Khanna Memorial Lecture on April 7 in which Supreme Court judge, Dipak Misra, chief delivered a lecture. Misra spoke at length about the qualities of a successful lawyer and about Justice H.R. Khanna’s sacrifice and moral courage. “A successful lawyer there has to be a complete wedlock between intelligence and intellect,” he said, while asserting that in this profession, focus was more important than concentration. Justice Khanna was a Supreme Court judge from 1971 to 1977.
Market economy
The commerce department of Upendra Nath Sarada Mahavidyalaya, Jajpur, hosted a two-day seminar on “Governance in India Capital Market” in which the speakers deliberated on the pros and cons of the issue. More than 100 delegates, including scholars and experts from various colleges, attended the sessions. The speakers noted that there had been a tremendous impact on the market economy of India after it adopted globalisation and liberalisation policies. Investors had started losing faith in the Indian capital market because of various scams that had taken place over the past few years, and there was an urgent need for good governance to check this sort of financial crimes and to instil confidence among the investors, they said. Inaugurating the seminar, Bhubaneswar Stock Exchange chief executive officer Debraj Biswal said the Securities and Exchanges Board of India should be given more teeth for better governance in capital market.
