Bhubaneswar, Feb. 10: In a bid to strengthen the recently launched CCTV-based surveillance system, police have identified 178 exit points in the city where new cameras will be installed.

The closed circuit cameras at these exit points would be integrated with the CCTVs installed at major junctions of the city.

"The objective of installing CCTVs at these exit points is to ensure that goons come under surveillance. For example in Satya Nagar, one of the most populated areas of the city, we have identified all the possible routes through which one can leave from the area. Once CCTVs are installed at these points, we can keep tabs on criminals trying to escape through these areas," said a police official.

Besides, the police are also planning to request the citizens to install CCTVs in front of their houses.

The police officials said the cameras installed in front of individual residences would also be integrated with closed circuit cameras on exit routes.

In 2013, the police managed to arrest a youth, who allegedly raped and killed an eight-year-old girl in Salia Sahi, after a CCTV installed outside the house of one of the residents captured the image of the accused while he was luring away the girl.

On February 5, city police launched a CCTV-based surveillance in the city when cameras were installed at 28 locations in the city, including AG Square, Master Canteen Square, Rajmahal Square, Airport Square, Kalpana Square and Kalinga Hospital Square.

"These CCTVs would definitely help keep tabs on the trouble mongers and facilitate crime detection. In the coming days, CCTVs would also be installed at major government establishments," said deputy commissioner of police, Satyabrata Bhoi.

The police have also decided to make red light violation detection (RLVD) andautomatic number platerecognition (ANPR) system at AG Square functional again.

The RLVD system is equipped with sensors that would automatically identify vehicles jumping red lights at the AG Square traffic signal. The ANPR system would zoom in on the number plate and capture them at the crossing.

"We will first make the citizens aware of the system by putting up display boards since the system is being introduced for the first time," said a police official.
