Bhubaneswar: Police have decided to ask owners of hotels, lodges and guest houses to install CCTV at entrances. The decision was taken after a 32-year-old married woman was allegedly killed in the room of a hotel, a few hundred meters from Mancheswar police station on Friday.
Deputy commissioner of police, Bhubaneswar, Anup Kumar Sahoo said though a number of major hotels in the city had their own security arrangements, most of the time these security measures were not being properly followed.
"We have found that hotels and similar establishments equipped with CCTV cameras don't have facility to store the footage. Installation of CTTV cameras at the entrance and front portions will definitely help the police during investigation of crimes. We will also ask owners to allot rooms by keeping valid identity proofs," said Sahoo.
The police said the security augmentation at these establishments would also be beneficial during the Men's Hockey World Cup to be hosted here in November. Thousands of foreigners are expected to throng Bhubaneswar for the event.
On Friday, Laxmipriya Biswal had checked in with a 25-year-old youth on Wednesday evening and claimed to be a couple. The youth, Aditya Mohapatra, has left the hotel with the keys of the room where he and the deceased stayed for two days.
"The hotel in which the murder took place did not have any CCTV for which we were not able to ascertain whether Mohapatra left the hotel with anyone," said a cop.
The police said they had already raided Mohapatra's home in Puri district, but he was not there.
"His mobile phone remained switched off from Thursday and we are yet to trace his location. We suspect that he has escaped to Karnataka where he used to work as a labour contractor. He is the only one who can tell what had happened inside the hotel room," said the police officer.
