Bhubaneswar, June 19: Asutosh Patnaik, a student who appeared for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class XII examinations this year, had high hopes of pursuing architecture from a reputable government institute.

In spite getting around 200 marks in JEE (Main), he cannot take part in the counselling process, as his mathematics score is 12 with total 68 per cent in Class XII CBSE examination.

"There was no change in the marking after the verification process so I have no option but to prepare for the compartmental examination. I am sure some mistake has happened during re-evaluation this year. CBSE has ruined careers of a number of students like me," Asutosh said.

A number of students have faced similar fate due to discrepancies in the CBSE Class XII marks this year.

Soumyajit Bal, a student of ODM Public School in the city, wanted to study engineering and also qualified JEE (Main).

His total score in Class XII is less than 75%, which is an essential criterion for taking admission in premier engineering colleges.

"We had expected him to score above 90 per cent but he has scored 48 in mathematics, 66 in chemistry, 67 in physics and 77 in English.

With such marks, he has few options. If we cannot register by June 26 for JEE counselling, he will lose one crucial year of his career," said Bichitra Kumar Bal, his father.

Shamikshya Sharma scored three in physics, eight in chemistry and 11 in biology. She is also waiting for the results of verification of marks."I have qualified several entrance tests of many universities and wanted to study at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences and Siksha 'O' Anusandhan University. But, with such marks, I cannot appear for the counselling process," she said.

Under such circumstances, Odisha Abhibhabak Mahasangha, the state-level parents' association of Class XII students, urged the ministry of human rights development to allow these students to take part in counselling for admission in national-level technical institutes.

"These students are getting deprived from higher education because of the fault of CBSE and loss of time due to the verification of marks or re-evaluation. They should be given a chance to take part in the counselling," said chairman of Odisha Abhibhabak Mahasangha Sudarshan Das.

A number of students today complained of discrepancies in marking days after the declaration of the CBSE Class XII results. Subhalaxmi Parida, went into shock when she browsed the CBSE result website this morning.

"I had above 80 per cent in all the subjects on the day of the declaration of the results. But, when I rechecked my marks today I found out that I had failed. I had no idea what to do and rushed to the CBSE office," she said.

A few other students also complained of similar problems.

The parents and students reported the matter to the CBSE officials who said that they would take necessary action at the earliest.
