Cuttack, April 16: A petition has been filed in Orissa High Court seeking a CBI probe into the murder of judicial officer Anupama Behera in Balasore last month.

Anupama’s mother Pramila Behera, 57, filed the petition expressing doubt over the “fairness” of investigation conducted by local police.

In her petition, Pramila has alleged that the police had investigated the murder “in a casual manner”. She has expressed suspicion that Anupama’s husband “might have had a hand” in the murder.

Anupama, 32, who was a process inspector in Balasore, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her official residence on March 15. Following her promotion and transfer, she was expected to join as a sub-judge of Koraput on March 25.

On March 17, the police arrested Jyotiranjan Mohanty, 39, and his brother Priyaranjan, 32, of Nayagarh and accused them of murder.

Later, superintendent of police, Balasore, Amrita Dash claimed that the murder was the outcome of an extra-marital affair between Anupama and Jyotiranjan.

Pramila, however, alleged in her petition that “the Balasore superintendent of police created a concocted story and trapped two persons as accused in a hasty manner”.

The single-judge bench of Justice S.C. Parija, before which the petition came up on Thursday, posted the matter for hearing after four weeks along with a response from the state government.

Anupama had married Sukanta Kumar Jena, a gynaecologist by profession, on June 17, 2009.

“She was not happy as her husband was having an extra-marital relationship with a woman in Nayagarh, where he was working as a gynaecology specialist,” Pramila claimed in her petition.

“This is for the first time in Odisha that a murder of a judicial officer has happened at her official residence. But, the local police investigated it in a casual manner and has hastily arrived at a conclusion,” the petitioner further claimed.
