Budget push for tourism

The state has earmarked special funds in its supplementary budget for the Men's Hockey World Cup and the Make in Odisha Conclave, keeping in mind that successfully hosting these two events would propel Odisha to new horizons in tourism.

Bhubaneswar: The state has earmarked special funds in its supplementary budget for the Men's Hockey World Cup and the Make in Odisha Conclave, keeping in mind that successfully hosting these two events would propel Odisha to new horizons in tourism.

The supplementary budget of Rs 12,790 crore, which was tabled by finance minister Sashi Bhusan Behera in the Assembly on Wednesday, earmarked special funds for these two events.

Both the events will be held in November and organising them has now turned into a big challenge for the government. The supplementary budget earmarked Rs 23 crore for the world cup and Rs 12 core for the biz conclave. Besides promotion of sports, the state has also earmarked Rs 16 crore for sports infrastructure.

Briefing reporters, Behera said: "The supplementary budget is aimed at fulfilling the requirement of funds for public welfare and development, mainly through reallocation of available resources and receipt of tied-up resources from various sources. We try to meet the needs and expectations of the people"

Keeping the general elections in mind, the state government has earmarked Rs 6,097 crore for infrastructure and the rural development sector.

"A provision of Rs 400 crore was made under the Buxi Jagabandhu Assured Water Supply to Habitation (Basudha) scheme to provide drinking water, Rs 1,500 crore for the housing scheme and Rs 2,065 crore for the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana," he said.

Behera also earmarked Rs 100 crore for the government's flagship Jaga Mission, Rs 300 crore for the Pradhan Manti Awas Yojana (Urban) and Rs 61 corre for urban sanitation under the Odisha Integrated Sanitation Improvement Project.

The state has also given top priority to the Swachh Bharat Mission, while Rs 211 crore has been earmarked for the National Rural Livelihood Mission. "We have also earmarked Rs 75 crore for the Biju Gram Jyoti Yojana and Rs 100 crore for Ama Ghare LED scheme," Behera said.

Under the social sector allocation, the government allocated Rs 62 crore for implementation of the Mukhya Mantri Swasthya Bima Yojana, Rs 82 crore for Swasthya Sahaya, another health programme, Rs 25 crore to minimise child an maternal morality rates under the Sampurna scheme, Rs 12 crore for free distribution of medicine under Nidan, Rs 50 crore under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Sashaktikaran Yojana and Rs 25 crore towards the Madhu Babu Pension Yojana.
