Sambalpur, Sept. 21: Two brothers from the city are all set to enter the Guinness World Records.
Rajesh Meher, 42, and his younger brother, Suraj Meher, 39, of Dhanupali have made a television remote control that's touted as the largest in the world.
The remote control is 4.5m long, 1.8m wide and 0.72m high. There are 37 keys in the remote control and is 23.68 times larger than a regular one.
Rajesh, who runs a furniture shop in the city, said: "We started making the remote control after we got the approval from the office of the Guinness Records in London on June 11. It took us 68 days to make the grand TV remote control for our LCD television. We spent around Rs 50,000 for making the remote control."
Rajesh's younger brother, Suraj, who is a stationary shop owner, has already figured in the Limca Book of Records for making the smallest fan.
"My brother has already found a place in the Limca Records for making the smallest fan. That recognition inspired us and we decided to make an attempt to make an entry into the Guinness Records," said Rajesh.
"I had to sell my bike to arrange money for making the largest remote control. But I am happy as we succeeded in making it. We worked for 4 to 5 hours daily to make the remote control," said Suraj.
The brothers initially wanted to invite the officials of Guinness Records to Sambalpur, but could not do so as they could not arrange the necessary amount.
"It would have cost us around Rs 7 lakh. We could not arrange the money. Hence, we decided to send videos and photographs as well as news clippings to the office of Guinness Records for entry," the younger brother said.
At present, a 3m-long television remote control holds the record for the largest remote control. "We are sure that we will find an entry in the prestigious book with our 4.5m-long remote," Suraj said.
"The remote can control a LCD television. It will certainly find place in the Guinness Records," said Suraj's friend Surya Panigrahi.
