Emergency landing
Bhubaneswar: An Air India flight carrying 152 passengers and crew from Bangalore to Calcutta made an emergency landing at the Biju Patnaik International Airport because of a technical snag. The AI-772 Bangalore-Calcutta flight suffered the snag within an hour of taking off from Bangalore on Saturday morning. The plane landed in Bhubaneswar after the pilot contacted the air traffic control at Calcutta.
Nine killed
Bhubaneswar: Nine persons were killed in separate road accidents across the state on Saturday. One person was killed in Kendrapara when a private bus hit his bike, while three persons were killed in Ganjam. In the third incident, a pedestrian was killed after he was run over by a sand-laden truck at Aska in the district. In Sambalpur, two persons were killed when a speeding truck hit their motorcycle. In Puri, a youth was killed after a bike hit him. Another person died in an accident near CDA in Cuttack.
Civic election
Bhubaneswar: BJD candidate Bhanumati Mazoomdar defeated Congress counterpart Abha Pandey by 198 votes to win the bypoll in ward No. 12 of Umarkote Municipality, the result of which was declared on Saturday. Elsewhere, Congress candidate Nagabhushan Achari defeated the BJD's Krutibas Swain by 106 votes in the bypoll for ward No. 9 of the Buguda NAC in Ganjam.
