Bhubnaeswar, May 3: Two bodies were found in two separate incidents at Koradakanta and Khandagiri hills today.

Police seized the half-burnt body of a woman from Koradakanta in Saheed Nagar police limits early this morning, while the decomposed body of a man in his 30s was found hanging from a tree on Khandagiri hills in the evening.

In the first case, the police said they received information of a body being put on pyre by the in-laws of the deceased, identified as Pratima Swain, 28, at the village burning ground.

"By the time we reached the spot, the body was almost burnt. We seized the remaining portion of the burnt body and will send it for forensic examination," said a police officer.

Further investigation by the police revealed Pratima had married in 2012 and the couple of had family disputes over petty matters several times in the past.

"The in-laws of the deceased claimed Pratima had committed suicide by hanging herself last night after a quarrel ensued between the couple. The in-laws also claimed Pratima had attempted suicide twice in the recent past," said a police officer.

Inspector in charge of Saheed Nagar police station Kishore Chandra Mund said that the family members of the deceased had not alleged any foul play in the incident.

"Despite the family members of the deceased not alleging foul play, we have started a suo motu investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to her death. We will also interrogate her in-laws to find out the reason behind not informing the police about the death and trying to cremate her in a hush," said Mund.

In the second incident, the body was detected after a few visitors to the Khandagiri hills complained of foul smell coming from the forest. Upon searching the forest, the police found the man's body hanging from a tree.

The police suspected that the death took place at least around a week ago, as the body was completely decomposed. The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained.

"Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. We did not find anything either from the spot or from his pockets, which can help us in identification of the body. We are going through the missing reports of various police stations in the city to get a clue," said a police officer.

In another development, GRP personnel today recovered the naked body of a woman that was lying on a railway trace in Belapada police limits of Sambalpur. The woman's throat was slit, a leg was missing and there were several injury marks as well.
