Bhubaneswar: The BJP on Monday brought out a charge sheet against the BJD government, listing its alleged failures and corruption, including the mining and deposit collection scams, that have taken place during its 18-year rule.
The charge sheet assumes significance ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Cuttack, where he will present his government's achievements. Sources said Modi was expected to present a list of 48 achievements.
BJP state unit president Basant Panda released a 71-page booklet mentioning how the Naveen government had indulged in scams such as the rural job, forest land and the mining ones. The party said the corruption relating to the deposit collection scam was to the tune of Rs 22,901 crore.
Similarly, based on the Justice MB Shah Commission report, the BJP alleged that with the state government's active support, the mining mafia had looted minerals worth lakhs of crores and the state had suffered a loss to the tune of Rs 59,000 crore.
The party also cited corruption to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore in the implementation of works under the rural job scheme. The other major corruption instances that it cited included the Rs 18,000 Balighat corruption and Rs 28,000 forest land scam. It also alleged that there was rampant "percentage" culture going on in the execution of various works. The corruption related to it was to the tune of Rs 30,000 crore.
Panda said: "We will shortly reach the doorsteps of the people, highlighting how corruption and scams are prevalent in the state. The situation has changed over the years and the government's popularity has taken a nosedive."
Stating that the situation was not the same as it had been in 2014, Panda said: "There is a tacit understanding between the BJD and the Congress here in the state. The BJD has turned into a B-team of the Congress."
BJP vice-president Samir Mohanty said: "Once the Prime Minister delivers speech from Cuttack to the country on May 26 about the BJP government's success, it will have its impact on the Naveen government."
However, the BJD's Cuttack-Barbati MLA Debasis Samantray said: "We welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the city. But, we expect to know his stand on the Mahanadi issue, unemployment and how many Odias have been recruited in the IOCL refinery in Paradip. Earlier, he had visited the state but failed to make any dent on the image of Naveen Patnaik."
