Cuttack: Sushant Dhal Samant, the elder of the gangster siblings, is back in news with city police seeking his remand for three days and arresting BJD councillor Ranjita Biswal on Wednesday for her alleged links with the don.
Cuttack deputy commissioner of police Akhileswar Singh said a plea had been filed in the court of the judicial magistrate first class seeking remand of Sushant, who is now lodged at Jharpada Jail in Bhubaneswar, for interrogation in connection with a recent firing case.
On February 23, criminal Mrutunjaya Nayak alias Miku allegedly fired at one Bijay Kumar Pal at Subhadrapur in Sadar police station limits.
Miku, who lives at Nayapalli in Bhubaneswar, was released from Jharpada jail three days before the incident.
"Prima facie it has been found that Miku had fired at Bijay Kumar Pal at the behest of Sushant Dhal Samant," Singh said. Miku was arrested from near Barabati Stadium on March 3.
Singh said Biswal, the councillor of ward No. 7 in Cuttack, was arrested for her alleged involvement in the firing case for abetting the crime. Another person Sarat Behera was also arrested on similar ground. The BJD has since expelled Biswal.
"The accused Ranjita Biswal and Sarat Behera facilitated the crime by arranging and handing over a packet of fire arms of three pistols and 55 rounds of ammunition to the main accused Miku Nayak on February 23," Singh said.
"Both Ranjita Biswal and Sarat Nayak were the henchmen of veteran criminal Sushant Dhal Samant," Singh said.
The police had earlier grilled Ranjita in 2016 for her links with the gangster duo as she was the joint secretary of Cuttack Nagar Yuvak Sangham, a social organisation the duo had floated.
On Sunday the cops had claimed that though Sushant was in the jail in Bhubaneswar, he managed Miku's bail on the promise that he would eliminate Pal.
The police had recovered two 9mm pistols, along with 29 rounds of live 9mm ammunition, from Miku. The firearms were buried in the courtyard of Miku's house at IRC Village in Bhubaneswar.
Cuttack police had arrested the don siblings on January 29, 2016, for their alleged involvement in kidnapping and murder of their aide Manoj Mallick. Later they were also charged with the kidnapping and murder of another aide Om Prakash Swain.
The younger brother Sushil is lodged in Balasore jail.
