Bhubaneswar, Sept. 26: A Plus Two arts student of BJB Junior College, who is also a contestant in the upcoming students’ election, was allegedly beaten up by four persons on the institute’s premises today.

Following the incident, more than 50 students gheraoed Badagada police station demanding action against those involved in the attack.

Sumit Singh said he was attacked while on his way to attend classes this morning.

“Four youths, including a student of the college, came on two motorcycles and beat me up,” said Singh, who had to be admitted to Capital Hospital with injuries on his nose.

His supporters then gheraoed Badagada police station and lodged a complaint.

The police have started an investigation into the matter. “We have deployed our personnel for the student polls scheduled for October 8. We have also tightened security on the campus,” said a senior police officer.

College authorities said they would be forced to call off the elections if such violence continued on campus.

Utkal University and Maharishi College of Natural Law authorities have already cancelled elections this year following student unrest. Sources said the students’ wing of all major political parties were targeting BJB College and chances of pre-poll violence were high there.

In a related incident, around 20 unidentified persons hurled two crude bombs on a house at BJB Nagar last night. The owner of the house, Gita Sahani, today lodged a complaint with the Badagada police in this connection. Though the exact cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained, sources said that it might be linked with the upcoming college elections as Gita’s son is supporting a poll candidate of BJB College.
