Teen prodigy
Likhit Nayak, a Class XII student of DAV Public School (Chandrasekharpur), Bhubaneswar, achieved a rare feat in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) conducted by the College Board, USA, by securing 100 per cent marks. He secured full marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics in this prestigious exam last month for which more than 20 lakh students had appeared worldwide. With this, Likhit has now been invited to pursue higher education and research in top-notch US universities such as Stanford, Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has also qualified for the central scholarship programme Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana this year. Likhit is the second student from the school after Anshuman Swain in 2012 to bag a perfect 2,400 score.
Special bond
Delhi Public School Kalinga, observed Grandparents’ Day on November 19 with fanfare. Nursery children welcomed their grandparents and entertained them with song and drama performances. School trustee Mala Mishra said children must spend quality time with their grandparents and elders, and learn life lessons from them. The following day, the school awarded all their scholars with the scholar gown, ties and badges for excellence in academics. Chief guest for the event was A.S. Verma, regional officer, CBSE for Bhubaneswar region. A total of 68 students from classes VIII to XII were felicitated.

Song and design
A state-level inter-school group song competition was organised at DAV Public School (Chandrasekharpur), Bhubaneswar, on November 16 for students of classes V to VII as part of its silver jubilee celebrations. Sixteen schools took part in the competition. DPS, Kalinga, DAV Kalinga Nagar and St Xavier High School, Kedar Gouri was ranked first, second and third, respectively. Consolation prizes were announced for LR DAV, Cuttack and DAV Nimapara. In another event, the students of DAV-Chandrasekharpur took part in a cover page designing competition to mark the National Book Week, which concluded on November 20. About 70 students of Class V to VII took part in the event to create awareness on developing a reading habit. Meritorious students were awarded with books.
Education day
The birth anniversary of freedom fighter and the first education minister of India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, was observed as National Education Day on November 11 by the students of DAV Public School, Unit-VIII, to commemorate his contribution to education. On the occasion, students took part in seminars, essay writing, elocution, debate and drawing competition. The school had invited inmates of a local orphanage Aashraya, who took part in school activities. A film screening was also held. Mother’s Public School teacher Latika Pratap and student Rituparna Padhy were felicitated in New Delhi on National Education Day for working on a community service project. ODM Public School was also awarded Rs 10,000 and a citation for exemplary contribution in social service, environmental care and human rights protection on the occasion. A total of 157 Schools had submitted their records in social service field, of which 14 were identified as potentially outstanding ones.
Helping hands
After cyclone Phailin and flash floods ravaged the state, a group of 15 students of capital-based ODM Educational Group swung into action, visiting affected areas in Ganjam and Khurda districts to distribute relief materials. The Plus Two scouts and NCC cadets, all members of the group’s disaster management club, toured villages in a chartered vehicle, carrying cooked food as well as dry food such as biscuits, bread, water pouches and other essentials to meet the emergency needs of the victims.
Role play
A group of five Class IX students from Uditnagar High School, Rourkela, will take part in the National Role Play competition after bagging the second spot in the regional rounds in Patna last week. The school had won the all-India final last year. School authorities felicitated the five-member troupe on October 30.
Gift of gab
Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Rourkela, bagged top honours in an inter-school debate competition held at St Paul’s School on November 10. Jyotirmayee Sahoo and Aliva Mishra were adjudged best speakers for speaking in favour and against, respectively, of the topic “Minors should be given serious punishment for heinous crimes”.
Carmel School and MGM School finished in second and third positions.
