
Koraput: Tension ran high at Ranigad in Rayagada town on Saturday as a group of nearly 50 people belonging to Ramchandrapur allegedly attacked the house of BJD's Rajya Sabha MP N. Bhaskar Rao.
At the time of attack, neither the MP nor his family members were present in the house.
Four BJD activists were injured in the attack. The attackers damaged chairs, asbestos, door and several vehicles parked near the MP's house. "The injured have been admitted at district headquarters hospital, and a case has been registered on the complaint of one injured person, identified as Srinivas Rao," said Rayagada additional superintendent of police Y. Jagannath Rao.
sources said there was a heated exchange between few BJD activists and a group of tribal youths of Ramchandrapur, situated on the outskirts of Rayagada town, on Friday night, resulting in a palpable tension between the groups.
"While the BJD activists were present near the MP's home, a group of youths from Ramchandrapur swooped down on them and attacked them mercilessly," said an eyewitness.
The police said the incident took place around 1.30pm, and the situation remained tense in the area since then. Adequate policemen have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.
"We have initiated an investigation into the case and are trying to track down the attackers," said Rao.
The police said that even though the MP had no direct involvement in the incident, but the developments were being closely monitored to ensure that the violence was not escalated.
The MP could not be contacted for his comments.
"At present, the situation is under control, but we can't be complacent. The attackers have also filed two complaints against the supporters of the MP, and those are also being examined," said the additional superintendent of police.
"As many as seven police teams have been formed to investigate the case," he said.
