Bhubaneswar, March 27: Six celebrities, consisting of film and sports stars, are contesting from various Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.
With two of them — film star-turned-politician Siddhant Mohapatra and former India hockey captain Dilip Tirkey — having tasted political success, four others are trying for a similar goal. The total assets of Mohapatra have gone up threefold in his five-year tenure as an MP, while Tirkey doubled his property in his two-year tenure as a Rajya Sabha member.
While Mohapatra would contest from the Berhampur Lok Sabha seat as a BJD candidate for second time on the trot, the former Hockey India captain would contest from Sundargarh Lok Sabha constituency on a ruling party ticket.
The affidavit, filed with the returning officer by the actor, shows that his movable assets have increased by almost seven times — which include vehicles worth around Rs 45.56 lakh. He owns two superbikes worth around Rs 13.10 lakh. But in 2009, he had two four-wheelers and two motorcycles worth around Rs 4.65 lakh. Besides the actor owns a multi-gym. However, the actor and his wife Sanjeeta Mohapatra, a former actress of Odia cinema, appear to have little interest in jewellery.
Similarly, the hockey star has doubled his property in the past two years after he was elected for Rajya Sabha in 2012, though he has less interest in jewellery and vehicles. But, he has increased his assets through purchase of land at various places, including Bangalore and Hyderabad.
However, all four others are novices to the world of politics. Veteran character actor Bijay Mohanty is contesting from the Bhubaneswar parliamentary constituency as a Congress candidate, while yesteryear heroine Aparajita Mohanty is fighting from the Cuttack Lok Sabha seat from the same party. Besides well-known comedian Tattwa Prakash Satapathy is contesting as a BJD candidate from the Champua Assembly seat in Keonjhar. Another actor Akash Das Nayak is fighting from the Korai Assembly seat on a BJD ticket.
Aparajita has property worth Rs 78.42 lakh, including both movable and immovable assets, while her husband and yesteryear superstar Uttam Mohanty owns assets worth around Rs 2 crore. The couple own one car each. Their only son Babusan Mohanty is also an actor in the Odia film world.
Bijay Mohanty owns properties worth around Rs 17.03 lakh, while his wife Tandra Roy, a former actress, has assets worth Rs 1.56 crore. But neither the actor nor his wife owns a car. “I was providing entertainment to people and thought politics would be good for serving them. So, I joined politics,” said Mohanty.
Actor Akash Das Nayak, who is the son of trade union leader Mayadhar Nayak, is the poorest among these celebrities. Akash and his wife Subhrajyoti Hati own property worth around Rs 33.50 lakh. Both have no vehicles.
Tattwa Prakash Satapathy owns property worth around Rs 95.22 lakh. Though he owns no jewellery, he has two four-wheelers and a motorcycle.
Sources close to the comedian said that coming from a poor background he struggled to make it big in the film world. “His recent hit films in which he has acted as hero have raked in money,” said a source.
