Cuttack, July 16: A woman, who was allegedly stripped naked and beaten up mercilessly by goons at Jagatsinghpur district last month, today died at SCB Medical College and Hospital.

The 32-year-old woman from Mangarajpur village under Kujanga block had suffered severe spinal and head injuries and was undergoing treatment at the central intensive care unit of the state-run hospital.

“The patient died of renal failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome,” said emergency officer B.N. Moharana. The woman was beaten up with iron rods, stripped and paraded naked in the presence of her husband by five of her neighbours on June 15 for allegedly objecting to stealing vegetables from her garden.

Her neighbours Rabi Mallick, along with his family members Gangadhar, Chabi and Pabitra, were arrested following a public uproar in the area. One of the accused persons, Netrananda, is at large.

According to her family members, the victim had undergone a minor surgery at a private nursing home and was readmitted to SCB hospital on July 9 and was shifted to the central intensive care unit on July 11. The state government had earlier sanctioned Rs 2 lakh from the chief minister’s relief fund for her treatment.

“They (the accused) had beaten up and stripped my wife naked in front of me for a minor issue. Police should initiate stern action against the accused,” said her husband.
