
Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday announced an additional cash reward of Rs 1.5 crore for sprinter Dutee Chand, who scripted history and won a silver medal in the women's 200metre at the Asian Games in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Earlier on Monday, Naveen had announced a cash prize of Rs 1.5 crore for Dutee after she won silver in the 100metre.
"According to the revised Sports Award Policy, the chief minister has announced another cash award of Rs 1.5 crore for her in addition to Rs 1.5 crore earlier," the chief minister's office said in a press release.
The Odisha Athletics Association and Odisha Olympic Association will also give Rs 50,000 each to Dutee for her achievement.
On Wednesday, Naveen had called Dutee personally and congratulated her for bringing glory to the state and to the country as well.
Naveen also announced that his government would bear all expenses for Dutee's preparations for 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Earlier, the state government had announced to set up an Athletics Academy to promote athletics in the state.
Reacting to the cash award, Dutee's elder sister Saraswati Chand, a sprinter who works with Odisha police, said: "We are thankful to the chief minister."
Chand said: "Dutee is now in a relaxed mood in Jakarta and shopping. She will return to Bhubaneswar next week."
Asked how the family will spend the money, Saraswati said: "It all depends on Dutee. She has plans to do something for our village."
Revealing Dutee's plan, she said: "Dutee has requested a number of important persons to set up a hospital in the village. She will pursue it seriously on her return."
Saraswati added: "We will tell her to concentrate on winning a medal at the Tokyo Olympics. We all want to see her win a medal in the Olympics, as she has the potential to do it." Sports minister Chandra Sarathi Behera has also congratulated Dutee on her success.
