Bhubaneswar, Jan. 22: Students of the College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar, organised a competition called Dress Your Book.
On Tuesday, around 14 teams took part in the event. The participants were asked to design the covers of their favourite books and also write its synopsis. While there were many entries for English fictions, Odia classic Jagyaseni also got a facelift at the event.
'The participants were asked to assume themselves as the author and come up with a synopsis of the piece. Their creativity was put to test in the competition where they had to design the book cover keeping the plot in mind,' said Biswaranjan Acharya, a final-year student of mechanical engineering and the literary secretary of the event.
From J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series to John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, varieties of books were remodelled.
The two-toned book cover for Pinki Virani's national-award winning Bitter Chocolate: Child Sexual Abuse in India was not only visually appealing but thought provoking as well. The human figure drawn on the book portrayed the sensitive issue.
Ankita Satpathy, Anisha Samal and Subhashree Naik were awarded for their ingenuity. Ramakrishna, Baibhav and Sovan revamped the cover of Jackie Collins's Lethal Seduction, drawing a mermaid whose long black hair transformed into a humongous scorpion.
'The idea is to inculcate in the students the love for books. This generation is dedicated to the digital world so much that they tend to become oblivious to the essence of reading,' said Sudhapadma Lenka, who tried to give a makeover to Pratibha Ray's Jagyaseni.
