Bhubaneswar, July 29: The court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class granted bail to actor-turned-film producer Pupinder Singh shortly after his arrest today in connection with a cheating case registered against him by a private company in 2013.

Police had arrested Singh for defying court summonses in the case. However, his wife Rupinder Kaur still faces a non-bailable warrant in the case.

The court had issued a non-bailable warrant against the actor and his wife on Thursday. The police arrested him from his Hanspal residence. However, they could not trace his wife.

The court had issued the warrant against the actor and his wife for not appearing before it in three cases for allegedly cheating the owner of S.K. ORA Private Limited, a mining company. Sources said Singh had allegedly cheated the company's owner to the tune of Rs 30 lakh on the pretext of making an Odia film.

The actor had deposited three cheques as security with the company. However, after the committed dates for repaying the money passed and with the actor making no efforts to re-pay the company, it deposited the cheques. However, the cheques bounced, following which, the company lodged a complaint in the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Bhubaneswar. Three cases had been registered in the court in this connection in 2013.

Pupinder and his wife were summoned to appear before the court during the hearing, but the duo failed to show up. As a result, the court issued a warrant against them on Thursday and directed Balianta police to immediately arrest them.

"We arrested Pupinder Singh from his residence in Hanspal after getting the warrant from the court. We are trying to trace his wife and will arrest her shortly," said a police officer.

While Singh refused to comment on the case, he thanked the court. Sources said a compromise in the case was likely between the private firm and the actor.

Singh has been active in the Odia film industry since 2008 and acted in over a dozen films. He also produced several others. Among the major films that he has been involved in, both as actor and producer, are Subha Vivah, Kichi Khata Kichi Mitha, Jaggu Autowala, Daha Balunga and Samaya Bada Balaban.
