Jajpur, June 12: Police today arrested a 25-year-old jilted lover at Binjharpur in the district for allegedly throwing acid on a teenage girl leaving her seriously injured.
Enraged over being spurned by her, the youth threw acid on the girl, who has recently passed the matriculation examination. While the prime accused, identified as Soumyaranjan Samal of Angalo village, was arrested today, his accomplice, Bitu Ray, is still at large. The girl has suffered serious burn injuries on her face, leg, thigh and hand and is admitted at district headquarters hospital.
The police said Samal had been pestering the 15-year-old girl belonging to the same village to accept his love. But, she had turned down it. When she had told her family members about Samal’s advances to her, they also warned him and informed his parents. This had enraged the youth.
On Sunday night, sources said, when the victim was answering nature’s call outside her house along with her mother and a younger brother, Samal, accompanied by his friend Bitu, threw acid on the victim. Her mother and brother had escaped unhurt.
Though the incident was reported to the police on June 8, the cops registered the case only after being directed by the district police authorities.
“After the incident, I immediately informed my husband, who is working in New Delhi, over phone. He spoke to the inspector in charge of the local police station,” said the victim’s mother.
Her husband later spoke to the district police official to get the case registered.
“Today, we arrested the prime accused and are looking for his accomplice,” said Binjharpur police station inspector-in-charge Parsuram Sahu.
