Rourkela, Dec.14: The dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the district Congress unit in Sundergarh passed off peacefully today with police detaining about 100 party workers.

The bandh was called in protest against the police for asking women to remove their black scarves at chief minister Naveen Patnaik's rally a few days ago.

The government has ordered a police probe into the incident, but the Congress wants a judicial probe. It has also accused the ruling party of hurting "the dignity of women".

All government offices, schools, colleges, banks and business establishments remained shut. Major business areas also did not open. However, at Koelnagar, 75 per cent of the market was functional.

Congratulating the people for their support, former Congress MLA from Rourkela Prabhat Mohapatra said: "The state government should know that there is resentment over the incident."

Mohapatra criticised the police action at Mangaspur and said a proper and impartially investigation was necessary in the incident.

Sub-divisional police officer, district intelligence bureau, P.K. Mohapatra said: "More than 100 Congress workers were detained by us, however, the bandh was peaceful." The effect of bandh was partial at Bonai, where offices and courts remained closed, but schools and colleges remained opened. Sub-divisional police officer, Bonai, P.K. Jena said: "There were no untoward incidents, but we have detained 10 Congress workers during the bandh."

The bandh affected life in Sundergarh with Congress workers blocking the Rourkela-Sambalpur highway at Toll Gate, Ranibandh and College bypass. The youth Congress workers took out a bike rally and urged shopkeepers not to open their establishments.

Criticising the stole incident, Congress leader Dushmant Nayak said: "The enquiry should be done by a judge and not by the police."

Nayak said: "The chief minister has ordered a probe, but inspector general of police R.K. Sharma is yet to begin investigation."
